Countries around the world are experiencing health workforce crises, characterized by shortages, burnout, and attrition of health workers. Protests by health workers have also garnered increasing attention, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this talk, Dr. Sriram will present findings from research on trends in the use of protest and other forms of advocacy by health workers, drawing on both global trends and examples of national-level dynamics from Canada and India. Dr. Sriram will also present findings of case-study research that examines the role of health workers in health policy processes in Canada, India, and other contexts. This discussion will highlight how health worker protest and advocacy offer important perspectives on the drivers of and solutions to the global health workforce crisis.

Veena Sriram is an Assistant Professor with a joint appointment in the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs (SPPGA) and the School of Population and Public Health (SPPH) at UBC. Dr Sriram has conducted extensive research at the national and state level in India, exploring a range of health policy and system questions, including medical specialization, health workforce policy development, the functioning of national health authorities and emergency care systems. She has also contributed to expanding the application of theory and concepts to study power in health policy and systems research.
