CHSPR Seminar | Healthcare funding policies for integrating care and improving health outcomes

Jason Sutherland, CHSPR

Tuesday, May 3, 2022
12-1 pm PT
SPPH B104, or zoom

Health Canada’s Deputy Minister, Dr Stephen Lucas, commissioned eight policy papers in 2021 on a number of subjects. Dr Jason Sutherland was commissioned to write one, on the topic of healthcare funding policies. This talk will summarize the output from those efforts and discuss the pros and cons and suitability of a number of different healthcare funding policies. For example, episode-based payments, which create financial incentives by aligning care providers across settings, could help break down barriers between and within sectors and providers. Similarly, capitation-based funding models create incentives for organizations to work together across sectors. The goal of these primary care-focused models is to align funding with resident’s long-term health outcomes. Read the policy paper here.

Jason Sutherland is Interim Director of CHSPR, the director of the Master of Health Sciences program in the School of Population and Public Health, the editor-in-chief of Healthcare Policy, and an associate editor of Health Policy. His current research projects include cross-sector funding policy and investigating associations between healthcare funding policy and patients’ health and health outcomes.

This seminar will be conducted in a hybrid format, with in-person attendance in B104 in the School of Population and Public Health and virtual attendance via Zoom. Please contact Joyce (chspr.reception@ubc.ca) to RSVP in person or for the Zoom link.
